The DS1800 is a dual audio-taper potentiometer designed specifically for use in the feedback path of the inverting configuration of an operational amplifier (see Figure 2). In this configuration, the DS1800 provides a VO /VI relationship of -20log(RF/RI), giving a gain/attenuation range covering +20 dB to -63 dB. Each potentiometer has a total of 129 positions including mute. This amplifier circuit contains four 30-dB LOGARITHMIC stages. Gain in each stage is such that the output of each stage is proportional to the logarithm of the input voltage over the 30-dB input voltage range. Each half of the circuit contains two of these 30-dB stages summed together in one differential output that is proportional to the sum of the logarithms of the input voltages of the two stages. The four stages may be interconnected to obtain a theoretical input voltage range of 120-dB. In practice, this permits the input voltage range typically to be greater than 80-dB with log linearity of ± 0.5-dB (see application data). Bandwidth is from dc to 40 MHz.
This circuit is useful in data compression and analog compensation. This LOGARITHMIC amplifier is used in log IF circuitry as well as video and log amplifiers.
The TL441 is characterized for operation over 0°C to 70°C.

The UM9552 is a very long minority carrier lifetime (70 ms typical) PIN DIODE that has been developed for low HF or LF Band Attenuator Applications. They have been evaluated for attenuator linearity and distortion characteristics in a Bridge Tee Attenuator Circuit at 455 KHz (the common intermediate frequency for AM transmitters and receivers). When the UM9552’s are used as the two variable resistors in the Bridged Tee Circuit, the Third Order Intermodulation Products are below -60 dBc with 0 dBm input power over an attenuation range of 4 dB to 30 dB.
These thicker, longer lifetime PIN diodes exhibit a more linear forward biased resistance (RS) vs forward bias current (If) relationship, which greatly simplifies the design of the driver circuits that supply the bias currents over the specified attenuation range. This task is simplified if the low attenuation range is truncated and the few dB are compensated by commercially available, inexpensive 4 to 6 dB gain blocks.

The AD606 is a complete, monolithic LOGARITHMIC amplifier using a 9-stage “successive-detection” technique. It provides both LOGARITHMIC and limited outputs. The LOGARITHMIC output is from a three-pole post-demodulation low-pass filter and provides a loadable output voltage of +0.1 V dc to +4 V dc. The LOGARITHMIC scaling is such that the output is +0.5 V for a sinusoidal input of –75 dBm and +3.5 V at an input of +5 dBm; over this range the LOGARITHMIC linearity is typically within ±0.4 dB. All scaling parameters are proportional to the supply voltage.
The AD606 can operate above and below these limits, with reduced linearity, to provide as much as 90 dB of conversion range. A second low-pass filter automatically nulls the input offset of the first stage down to the submicrovolt level. Adding external capacitors to both filters allows operation at input frequencies as low as a few hertz.
